Challenger Game to be played during World Series

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (July 27, 2015) – In 1989, the Little League Challenger Division was established to provide a Little League experience to children with physical and intellectual challenges. In 2001, Little League gave two Challenger Division teams the opportunity to play a game at the Little League Baseball World Series.

“Playing in a World Series is the dream of millions of Little Leaguers around the world,” said the Sam Ranck, Little League Director of the Challenger Division and League Development Manager. “Challenger Exhibition games bring that opportunity to the boys and girls participating in the division, giving them a chance to make some wonderful, lasting memories with their friends.”

This year, for the first time, Challenger Division teams will participate in a game at the Junior Softball World Series in Kirkland, Wash., on Thursday, Aug. 6, at 10:45 a.m.

“The Little League Softball World Series Tournaments are some of the most exciting, competitive events in youth softball,” said Sara Thompson, Little League Director of Softball Development. “The Little League Softball World Series Challenger Exhibition Game is one of the favorite things on the schedule in Portland, not only for the fans, but for the teams and players, as well. We are looking forward to bringing these fun, inspirational games to all of the softball tournaments this August.”

Three more teams qualify for World Series

Here are the latest additions to the field for this year’s Junior Softball World Series:

  • The Texas West team from Robinson, Texas, will represent the U.S. Southwest. Texas West qualified with a convincing 11-1 over Texas East in the Southwest Regional Tournament championship game and went 4-0 in the tournament.
  • Beacon Hill Little League of Victoria, British Columbia, will represent Canada.
  • Rotterdam Little League of Rotterdam, The Netherlands, is the Europe-Africa representative. Rotterdam edged The Czech Republic, 6-4, in the championship game.

Four spots remain up in the air and will be determined in the remaining U.S. regional tournaments this week. You can track all the regional tournament action at the Little League Inc. website.

Host, Latin America teams qualify

Bellevue Junior League, representing the combined Bellevue East and Bellevue Thunderbird programs, will the the Host team for this year’s Junior Softball World Series. As the winner of the Washington District 9 tournament Bellevue earns the right to represent the home district.

Olmeca Little League of Mexico City will represent Latin America. Mexico defeated ASOFEM Little League of Maunabo, Puerto Rico — a three-time World Series champion over the years — in the championship game of the Latin America Regional Tournament, 11-7. Olmeca went 4-1 in the tournament, held in Rincon, Puerto Rico.

Bellevue and Mexico join the Asia Pacific representative from Norzagaray, Bulacan in the Philippines as the first three qualifiers. The remaining seven spots will be determined at regional tournaments in the U.S. as well as Canada and Europe-Africa. Asia Pacific team is first qualifier for 2015

The team from Norzagaray, Bulacan in the Philippines will represent Asia Pacific in this year’s Junior Softball World Series.

The Philippines defeated Indonesia to advance.

In the coming weeks regional tournaments around the world and here in the U.S. will determine the other World Series representatives. You can follow all the regional action at the Little League website.
